The course approaches the students to an interdisciplinary working method, also useful for dealing with the study of related subjects.
Prerequisites
Good knowledge of English
Teaching Methods
The course will make use of the participation of experts and external lecturers and of the collaboration of the Historic Office of the General Staff of the Italian Army and of the Historical Institute of Resistance in Tuscany.
Specific lessons will be dedicated to the study of sources using materials from Italian and American archives.

Not attending students, in addition to the study of the two textbooks, must present a written paper of about 20 pages with footnotes and final bibliography. The title of the paper must be agreed with the teacher and will consist in the deepening of at least two books included in the essential bibliography.
Type of Assessment
oral examination
Course program
Up until and beyond the '70s of the twentieth century, studies on the Resistance in Italy did not pay particular attention to the relations between the partisan organizations and the Allies. There was also the conviction (also conditioned by the statements of Ferruccio Parri who, as head of the Italian Resistance and, together with Leo Valiani, had already met in November 1943 the Allies in Switzerland) that the Anglo-Americans feared the strong influence of formations linked to the Communist party also in relation to the political future of post-war Italy. Among the few voices opposed to this interpretation, certainly one of the most authoritative was that of Leo Valiani. In fact, he has repeatedly supported in his writings that, ceased a certain initial preference for the partisan formations closer to the political perspectives of the Allies and an initial distrust for the creation of a “popular army”, the aid was distributed in equal measure to all partisan formations. About 4,000 tons of war material were parachuted from November 1943 to April 1945; too little against a partisan army that, at the beginning of 1945, exceeded one hundred thousand units, but still essential to continue and conclude the liberation struggle. After the '80s scholars such as Elena Aga Rossi, David W. Ellwood, Massimo Leonardis and Tommaso Piffer, deepened the theme of the relationship between the Italian Resistance and the Allies in the broader framework of the European liberation movements and in the relations between the two organizations, English (SOE: British Special Operations Executive) and American (OSS: American Office of Strategic Serivices) in closer contact with the partisan units. From their studies emerges a particularly articulated picture because the Allied policy towards the Italian Resistance reflects a complex interaction of different factors, often influenced by a lack of knowledge of local situations and conditioned by military considerations and other contingents.
The course retraces the history, not always linear, of the collaboration between the Allies and the Italian Resistance during the Second World War. In addition, it examines the role advocated by the American Secret Services (OSS) in supporting the partisan gangs through funding, collaboration in espionage, arms supply and the activation of clandestine radio. It traces the events that led to the establishment in Naples, November 1943, of the Italian Resistance Organization (ORI), placed under the command of Raimondo Craveri - Benedetto Croce’s son-in-law - and aimed at collecting Italian volunteers to be employed in a series of operations in collaboration with the Allies. The course also deepens the relationship between the OSS, the South Government and the SIM, the Italian Military Information Service which, after Rome liberation, was largely reorganized. The course subsequently traces the history of the assumption of General Cadorna, wanted by General Alexander, at the head of the resistance movement in the North-Italy Moreover, during the lessons, mention will also be made of specific events (Walla Walla mission) and the most important figures linked to the relationship between the Oss and the Italian partisan environment. The course will make use of the participation of experts and external lecturers and of the collaboration of the Historic Office of the General Staff of the Italian Army and of the Historical Institute of Resistance in Tuscany.
Specific lessons will be dedicated to the study of sources using materials from Italian and American archives.
