Learning Objectives
The course will introduce studentes to contemporary queer theories.
The first part will be dedicated to outline the idea of identity developed by Freud and criticized by Foucault.
The second part will take into account the works of Judith Butler and her idea of gender as performance.
The third part will discuss other queer perspectives on gender and power relations, reading texts by Jack Halberstam, Monique Wittig and other contemporary authors.
Teaching Methods
The course will be divided in three parts:
1. the first part will provide the key concepts of the Freudian notion of identity and the key theses of the 5 chapters of Foucault's Will to Knowledge . Some parts of Foucault's text will be read and discussed in class.
2. the second part will present the key concepts of gender as developed in Judith Butler's work. Her texts will be discussed in class.
3. The third part will consist mainly of discussions of reports and presentations by students about the texts of Halberstamm, Wittig, and other contemporary authors

Listening to the recordings of the lessons does not replace the attendance of the course. Students who cannot or do not intend to attend can take the exam as non-attending students.
Erasmus students can prepare for the exam on the English editions of the texts listed in the "programma esteso".
Type of Assessment
For non-attending students, the exam will be an oral interview on the texts indicated in the section Extended program.
The exam methods for students who attend the course will be communicated during the course.
