Whether they are based on small groups of activists or mass bureaucratic apparatuses, they are organized in informal or formal, closed or open, vertical or horizontal systems, they pursue democratic or authoritarian agendas, movements and parties are key elements of nineteenth- and twentieth-century politics. The course provides an overview of these societal structures and their transformations, as well as their cultures and practices of legitimization and mobilization.
Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental tools to orient themselves in the history of political movements and parties in the contemporary age in the Italian and European context. In particular, students will have to demonstrate that they have acquired the ability to explain and critically discuss the fundamental issues and problems concerning the various forms of participation in public life and the organization of political militancy, as well as symbolic languages and associative practices, including through the analysis of original sources and documents.
