Welcome From the President of the School

The 2021-2022 academic year, as the previous one, is starting in a truly exceptional way as the Covid-19 pandemic has severely hit our country, changing our lives and our daily habits. We hoped that we had left the virus behind us once and for all, and with it the rules of individual and collective protection that the virus has imposed on us since March 2020. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and at least for the first semester we will have to continue using the hybrid teaching mode that we have learnt to master.

Vaccines are the powerful, additional weapon that we have today compared to the academic year that has just ended. It is reasonable to assume that vaccines could allow us to gradually return to normality: teaching, internships, exams, graduation sessions - all in-person. After all, this is the teaching modality that we like, one based on the constant interaction between students and the Teaching Staff - and the only kind of teaching that, through face-to-face dialogue and daily attendance, can contribute to the building of an industrious and supportive study and research community.

On 20th September 2021, classes have restarted in-person. The University of Florence decided that for the first semester of 2021-2022 academic year, the classes will be held in a hybrid mode. The teaching staff will deliver face-to-face classes for a certain number of students on a rotating basis, to the extent permitted by the rules on social distancing. At the same time, each lesson will be both streamed for those students who have had to or want to, stay at home, and recorded and made available on a web platform. In this way, all students will take advantage of our teaching and will have the opportunity, albeit in rotation, to attend courses in-person.

The "Cesare Alfieri" School of Political Sciences has worked hard to ensure all of this. A timetable has been prepared for the first semester of 2021-2022 which shows all classroom lessons.

Naturally, we are confident that the trend of the epidemic will allow us to respect this plan, and we hope we can change it for the better. There is little space left for describing the School. I only wish to welcome the freshmen and welcome back enrolled students. The "Cesare Alfieri" School does not need too many introductions: it is the oldest and most prestigious School of Political Science in Italy and shares this position in Europe with Sciences Po in Paris, both were founded in 1875. From its foundation onwards, The School has a marked international dimension that still characterizes it today and results in a large number of students who, every year,  complete their training in foreign universities through the Erasmus project and other mobility programs. Interdisciplinarity is another feature in the School's DNA which allows our graduate students to have that open-mindedness and skills in different fields that are increasingly required today by a constantly evolving job market. Lastly, the ambition to keep training not only students capable of entering the world of work but also curious and aware citizens, has not changed. The "Cesare Alfieri" brand, in addition to connecting countless generations of graduates, remains a symbol of quality and prestige that is valued everywhere.
